Cats are interesting. When one is sick, the other knows. It makes the sick one vulnerable. With my two cats who were sisters, when one got sick, the other would hiss at it and chase it off. Used to make me so upset! Yes, same here. From what the vet told me, the healthy cat sees the sick cat as a threat to its territory. I said, "Leave alone! constantly.

Yup, that's what's happening. Whole house is out of balance!

So we had the surgery a week ago and he is still recovering. Stitches come out in a week. He's still a sweetheart and has handled it like a champ. He isn't crazy about the cone and being kept in a crate during the day but he does seem to love snuggles even more than before. When I get home from work he sits on my lap until it's time for bed, and he sleeps with me in a separate room until the stitches come out. We've kept him separated from our other cat who doesn't seem thrilled with him right now. The vet called us today and told us the biopsy of his eye did turn out to be cancerous, but they feel like it hasn't spread. Chest x-rays didn't show anything abnormal and blood test done a few months ago didn't show anything either. So that's good news. Just one more week until our house can return to normal. Glad to hear he is recovering. I hope that is complete!

I have never been a big pet fan. Too much work and I have always had other things to do.
My son just dropped in. The cat he has had for almost 7 years, the cat that became my grandson's first "you take care of him" pet, the cat that had been my daughter's pet before my daughter passed away, was hit by a car this morning and dies in his arms.
My son hasn't cried since he was 8. He broke his wrist playing soccer - and wanted to get back in the game. Was crying like a baby. We'll bury the cat in the back of the lot, in a wooded area we own, next to his friend Buster, a cat we buried a number of years ago now.
I get it a little better now.

You think (if you're like me) you can't be moved by them, and then you get one (my first cat was years ago). And when they go you realize how they were curled around your heart. It's painful. But they bring a lot of joy with them, if you let them, and that's worth the price to me. I lost two in two months last year (they were littermates so I knew they'd go about the same time), and soon I will get at least one more. It does take me a little while after I lose one. I don't let mine outside because, even though I am way out in the sticks, a lot of my neighbors are terrible drivers. They speed, ignore traffic controls, and regularly split their faculties between the road and some device. They struggle to realize a human is out there walking, much less a small animal.

Sorry for you and your son. Losing a pet is so painful, especially one that has such a special relationship to the family. My first cat had some time outside, and then got into a fight with another cat, got bit, and got an infection. Thankfully we were able to treat it in time and he recovered. But he lost the outside privileges until he was much older and was content to stay on our deck. He made it to 16 and died 5 years ago. Our two current cats have never been outside and never will for this very reason. Just too dangerous out there.

Although they were born "street cats", over the year since I adopted them they don't seem care to go back out there. I keep a birdfeeder on the tree in front of my windows and watching the birds and squirrels keeps them entertained. That and a little cat t.v. Several years ago I left my house only to spot four cats that had died in front of the woods in my neighborhood. I could not prove it but I am pretty sure that a cat hating neighbor poisoned them. No way would I risk putting my cats in danger.

Like I said at the start, I am not a pet guy, but this is one step from the guy who shoots up a mall. There has been some research, actually, suggesting that people who are serial killers started as killers of animals and... I don't know what word to use... progressed? Anyone suspected of animal abuse should, IMO, be on the authorities' radar, and not just animal control, either. Law enforcement.

If you watch the ID channel regularly, you'll see many cases of exactly that kind of thing.

I have been a cat parent to many beloved felines for most of my adult life. I am currently fostering two "abused" kitties right now in my very VERY small cottage and my 7 year old Tortie is being such an amazing good girl with them despite that she has been an "only cat" since I adopted her nearly 8 years ago (after my 13 year old cat died from renal failure), she was only 12 weeks of age. She will soon be 8 in June. These innocent kitties were rescued after someone saw them being tossed over a pier in a bag. Absolutely dispicable. Someone who knows I love animals and lives nearby called me and I immediately went to the scene and took them to my vet. I am keeping them for now until they are recovered and can be adopted.
The first cat that I ever had as an adult (I was 22) lived to be 19 years old. I won't get into the details of the backstory but my ex husband at the the time secretly took him away one day to be declawed because he was scratching at his precious furniture, one piece of which is till in my house today, a dumpy but comfortable loveseat. Probably 42 years old now. Yes, I know, disgusting, It is a cruel thing to declaw a cat. But that cat lived to be 19 and was such a little baby doll, so loving. He eventually became ill and I had to have him put down. I was inconsolable. But he was a blessing. He was beside me through my divorce and some of the worst days of my life.
Animals are precious.

Here's Wendell after his eye surgery. He's still a little skittish here and there but overall he's been his normal loving, playful and hungry self.
