It is closer than you think. Time to start getting the gear together, do some exercises/walking, hit the trap range and figure out where to shoot. The last one is always an issue. Last time out a decade ago I saw more dove in my feeders at home than I saw in the field. 😆😤 Oh yeah...double check that folding chair. Yes... I am going to make a run at getting out and enjoy my retirement. So what about you guys. Any favorite spots. Any favorite methods.....like knowing a farmer....putting out decoys.....and so on. Come on guys....lets, ahare. If you do I will entertain you with my wild animals with cell phone story. Or my taking the shotgun for a walk story(ies). Don't be shy.... Mourning Dove Season 2018-2019

Fond memories. That’s the first kind of hunting I ever did. Prince George’s County and one of the few places you could legally hunt. The first year I went dove hunting I did not hit one. 😮Pretty funny. Lots of lead falling from the sky.
Then I read an article in field and stream that you have to paint them out of the sky. Now I’m pretty good at it.
Not much meat on them.

Why would you want to kill a dove? They mate for life.Kill one you might as well killed both of them.

Are doves even good to eat? Never been to a restaurant where they're like "you must have the dove".
And I do enjoy game meat from time to time at a restaurant.

Why would you want to kill a dove? They mate for life.Kill one you might as well killed both of them. Ahhhh … then why would you kill a cow, steer, chicken, pigs, lamb/rams, turkey, fish, crab, shrimp, lobster, etc.? Do they not have a mate or family? And if they don't....don't you feel bad about ...taking that opportunity away ...as you munch on you Big Mac or your Chick fil A. Do you not eat at least one of these? Ahhhh I think you would be not telling the truth if you said ...no I don't. Does that stop you from eating these animals? My bet is nope. So, some people spend all sorts of money for free ranging..no antibiotics….all natural protein at the expensive 'organic' section of the food store. And pay a premium AND don't have to get their hands dirty. But have no problem consuming. Some people like myself, tend to be hands on.

Never much cared for dove hunting, but i got tired of hunting 20 years ago anyway, no disrespect to the hunters out there at all. Anyway, It always seemed like a waste, after all, there just isn't that much meat, and biting down on a missed pellet and going to the dentist later just isn't appealing. I continue to enjoy getting together from time to time with a few friends at a local farm for an afternoon of slaughtering empty soda cans and decimating water filled milk bottles.

Tell me where you go to get my game meat fix. Last time I had anything decent was at Pitty Pat's Porch. www.pittypatsrestaurant.com/However, looking at the menu...they no longer have... fresh crawdads...….all you can eat...nor venison...nor raccoon...nor muskrat and so on. Which made up the bulk of the menu when I was there about 15 years ago. It seems to be yuppified. 😫

I am wondering, did you get tired of taking your firearm for a walk? As I have...at least that is pretty much what you do on public lands in Maryland. So ...where did you hunt ...what state? Just curious....I am just wondering if I am spinning my wheels.

As far as where, deer, mostly in MD and PA, bear in PA and NY a few times. I never got a bear, tho. Truthfully, the PA and NY expeditions were more lodge-based drinkin' n' gamblin' junkets than real hunting trips, lol. Goose and duck on the Shore a few times. Never was one for small game, rabbit, squirrel and the like. But as I said, I like target shootin' from time to time, no range shooting, no club, just few close friends making some noise, legally. At least for now.

Can't remember the particular restaurants I've had game at but I doubt they'd be the places you'd go to. Venison, rabbit, duck, boar, etc..

Venison backstrap is good.
I can take or leave the rest of it. Some of it is awful but I guess it depends on the quality of the butcher.

Venison backstrap is good. I can take or leave the rest of it. Some of it is awful but I guess it depends on the quality of the butcher. There are a number of variables as to why some things are 'gamey' or tough or both. The biggest sin is not gutting properly and/or cooling the harvest in a timely fashion. Gutting any animal has to be done carefully especially deer. Where a puncture to the digestive track can ruin and taint the meat...even if you wash it off. The most common sin is the photo op. That is instead of field gutting the deer ASAP..many photo op in the woods....drag the deer (ungutted) to the truck...ride to the bar to show off....while the deer bakes in the sun....takes some more picture...and so on....meanwhile the toxins are perking through your harvest. Lastly the butcher be it a pro or you. It has been found that many after gutting immediately butcher....which is a mistake. One should wait till rigor mortis has passed (about 24 hours). Doing so prematurely (while stiff) tends to make the meat (any meat) tough. And waiting makes for a much better texture. Have a steak at Bonanza Steak House and then one at Ruth Criss. Totally different....because while the steaks maybe the same cut....Ruth's is hung and rig is waited out.....then butchered....then lastly aged even more. All costly.

Why do you say they would be places I wouldn't go? Name some in MD....let me judge. It must be nice to be gifted venison. Nothing better than a good venison stew made with some Guinness and veggies around Xmas time. When I went back to college for my MS in IT I worked as a dorm director and one of the Student Housing Directors was a big time hunter of deer. He would bring in all sorts of great 'deer snacks' and other natural delights....as he put it during the 12 days.

Why would you want to kill a dove? They mate for life.Kill one you might as well killed both of them. They will find another mate. No problem. I think what you say for the most part is true. But I 'think' there is one species ...the Trumpet Swan...that will not...if memory serves me correctly.

That's possibly one reason why butchers in this country have to have a special 'Game Licence' to be able to butcher and sell all Game. Personally, I don't eat it, so it is of no consequence to me.

I didn't mean to clutter things. I don't know if they do. All I was trying to do was back you 'will find another mate' statement...that is most do ...with some exceptions.

I am aware that some in the animal kingdom "mate for life". Want the list? No that won't be necessary. I am sure it is a short list. And humans are not on it. 😆 Kinda sad/scary, when people such as my wife and I that have been together over 35 years now (officially and unofficially) and we are the rare exception.

So, did anyone get out an get some dove hunting in? More importantly did you get anything for the freezer?
As I said on fishing thread:
I would be out myself but that got blown out of the water (literally) due to the flooding. So I never got to get my pre-season workout in. And at 64 (soon 65) and two fake heart valves and a heat index of over 105 and having to do it solo. I am taking a pass there will be two more.
So I will live vicariously through your reports for the time being.

But get enough of them togeather and you have some really good eating. My favorite is wrapping them in bacon and broiling. Great hot appetizer. Now me, I really like iron skillet racoon, Breaded and fried in bacon grease. Yum.
