I like to go to beer bars where they abide by all the rules. Proper glass for different styles, etc. But when I'm at home, it's usually just Natty Boh from the kegerator. I do have a Stella glass and a Leffe glass, though, and use them whenever I drink those beers.

Boh, in a can, pulled from an icy/watery cooler, with a pile of hot, steamed crabs on the table.
There is nothing better.

Good ole Natty Bo. Back in college, when the dinosaurs roamed, we had a joke about Natty Bo. At the local beer store you could get a 40 of Natty for 99 cents and a bottle of water for $1.09. We would ask what Natty was doing to the water to make it worth less.

A deal at half the price. If you are going to drink beer, drink beer. Lots to choose from. I don't know the perfect way to drink beer but it's ongoing research.

I like Natty Boh for a cheap beer. I was weaned on it down on the Shore and Glen Burnie. Are there better beers? Of course. But an ice cold Boh on a stinkin' hot day... ahhh! Crabs in WV tend to be served cold. There's a great little meat market about 45 minutes away that sells them freshly steamed once a week. If you get there at the right time, they're still hot. $20 a dozen seem fair to me.

Are we sure they are crabs and not large West Virginia spiders? Yes, back in the day beer pickings were limited. A trip to Blobs Park when young opened my eyes to Dortmunder. Then Wild Goose happened. Since then the world has changed and I've never looked back.

Blobs Park was awesome! Loved that place. Years ago I used to service the German Embassies WV vans, and for Christmas they gave me a case of Dortmunder Union direct from Germany. It tasted a lot better than what you could buy locally! Lately I've been partial to Duckpin Brewer's selection.

I'm west of the Mississippi so I have a different bunch of micros to choose from. I have to say the East in this case has a broader selection than the West. Here it's Sierra Nevada Torpedo for everyday work and Barrelhouse for a change. There's a pizza joint that serves Dogfish from the tap but that's brewed in good old Milton DE and boy is it good.

I've always blamed the Beechwood Ageing.

Beer snobs at Racers in NE Baltimore agree that it's not what they put into it, it's what they leave out. A proper beer should have plenty of B12 which, I am told, is what prevents a hangover. I don't know whether that's true but Bud will leave you with a headache when better brands won't.

I believe he's sold the place since then.

He had the place filled in the daytime with the retireds and the younger crowd in the evening. Free peanuts and 3 for $5 will always pack the place. No doubt it's more like 1 for $5 these days

He was a lot of fun, and a damned good driver.

Looks like it's still managed by the family. They still call it a cafe too when they don't serve food. It's 3 for 8 and change these days: www.harfordbeverage.com/

I'm glad to hear the family is still involved. I've met Gil's brother, but don't remember his name.
I remember Gil's bartender, John. He knew Gil and I were friends. He would always top off my glass and not charge! 🍺🍻

I went to a wine tasting and they served the same wine in different wine glasses and a generic house wine glass. It tasted different in each glass. The shape of the glass sends the wine to a different part of your palate. So I guess there’s no sense in buying a high dollar bottle of wine at a restaurant if they serve it in a crappy glass. I guess it’s similiar with beer

Try it for yourself.

I would pick him from a bus stop from time to time and it served as a great excuse to go to Racers. So sorry to hear that.

His wife is running the bar now. It’s a nice place around 50 taps or so. He went to the hospital and they gave him some medication that his body had a negative reaction to and that was it.
