Sucks. Trey is a great guy, great teammate and has been through some lean years in Baltimore. Stings to see him traded just as it appears we are turning the corner. Still. Trey is going to a team with a good chance to win the WS. I am happy for him and wish him the best.
In the meantime, call up another prospect and see what they can do. Trey for as good a guy as he is, isn't so good that his production can't be replicated.

[Seth] Johnson, 23, is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in seven starts for High-A Bowling Green this season. He might miss all of next season because of Tommy John surgery. From the Rays
[Chayce] McDermott, 23, is 6-1 with a 5.50 ERA in 19 appearances (10 starts) for High-A Asheville this season. From the Astros
I guess Mejdal told them these guys had some predicted upside. This looks like a bad deal that does not favor the Orioles from here. This might be in the Sun article; it's behind a paywall for me so I do not know.

Johnson I think will be decent when he recovers from TJ surgery.
Not sure about the other guy. It doesn’t seem like a great deal for the Os…

There was a time when part of the kit each Orioles draft pitcher received when he got to Florida was a glossy brochure entitled, "So You're Having Tommy John Surgery"...
I'm a little leery of trading for a guy who needs that but we'll see. Doctors seem extremely willing to perform those procedures, which suggests some combination of: works far more often than it does not, is the only thing that can save a career, is very lucrative, doctors like to do them. What I don't know is how those priorities are distributed.

Johnson is a solid prospect. If he wasn’t getting TJ there’s no way he’s traded. Sucks to have to wait two years for him to play baseball though. But I guess that is Elias looking at things long term.
Remember, Mancini is a rental player and doesn’t have an ops over 800. Hes not a great player although he’s a great guy and teammate.

I'll hope you are correct. Trading Mancini was a bad marketing move, and the willingness to do that is actually a positive sign for me, because in the Peter days is appeared that marketing was the primary driver of decision making, and it should not be. It stings a little bit that a good guy got moved, that's all. I'll miss him.
I do hope he wasn't the glue holding the clubhouse together, but if he was that's not my problem to solve. It's Hyde's. And realistically they probably weren't really positioned to make a post-season run this year anyway.

They can always re-sign him in two months if they want him back. I personally wouldn’t mind him coming back but I don’t think the money he’ll get will mesh with the production.
I also don’t know why they didn’t call up Stowers. Diaz is on the fast lane to a DFA.

I really don't like it. In fact I think it was idiotic. Two sketch prospects to possibly wreck what could be a playoff season. I know his production wasn't all that, but it was solid, and the intangibles were immeasurable.

It does seem like Elias doesn't care about this season, though. There is no guarantee we're better next season and in fact, I think the likelihood is that we are worse.

I think that's what frustrates me the most about the past few years is that some people think that the suffering and kicking the can guarantees future success. The franchise finally has some momentum and excitement with the fanbase and you trade the most popular player (who also bats in the middle of the lineup) for a reliever and a pitcher getting TJ surgery that won't be in the majors for 3+ years.

And they just traded the all star closer.

Elias is the best GM they have had in 20+ years, basically most of the Peter Angelos run. But that isn't saying much. Still... I am going to trust him. Mancini was likely a salary dump; with the dealing of Lopez it signals Elias has no intention of trying for the playoffs this year. That might be wise given that they would probably not go very deep and we don't want to derail a rebuild strategy for a losing attempt. Next year, if we don't see a team general managed more towards winning and less towards rebuilding, it will be time to pull out the Same $%^#, Different Owner posters. Update: Elias says he does not believe the team will qualify for a wildcard berth this year. See: www.mlb.com/orioles/news/jorge-lopez-traded-by-orioles-to-twins. His moves are consistent with that belief.

Nonsensical move. Lopez is under contract through 2024. Trey is a FA, Lopez wouldn't be one until before the 2025 season. And they got lottery picks for him. Awful, awful, awful.
