Darren O'Day, submarine pitcher, hangs up the cleats after 17 years, some of them productive ones here in Baltimore. He was one of those odd submarine delivery guys. His letter is currently top of his feed, here: twitter.com/DODay56

Wow, I didn't realize O'Day was still around. He was a great Oriole.

Still wish they'd do something to upgrade the offense.
I think the pitching will be solid...they traded for Cole Irvin last week. Nothing special but an innings eater who pitched to a sub-4.00 ERA last year in Oakland.

Still wish they'd do something to upgrade the offense. I'm thinking their mindset is that Henderson, Rutschman, Stowers are all going to continue their growth and upgrade the offense organically. I tend to agree with that to an extent. The hole that was Odor is gone, it's just a matter of having fewer holes and the young stars maturing.

Well, they won the first spring training tilt (vs. Twins) 10 - 5. Spring training games, of course, mean little. Still... it is a win.

Some new rules have come into force. One is a pitch timer: pitches must occur within 15 seconds (bases empty) or 20 seconds (runners on). The batter must be alert to the pitcher by the 8 second mark or he is assessed a strike (and can strike out, as happened to a Red Sox batter yesterday). Pitchers who are not ready are assessed an automatic ball. The next batter must be ready within 30 seconds but the umpire has a little bit of discretion there (if the catcher must don or doff his protective gear, for example). During each at bat the pitcher may attempt no more than two pickoff throws.
Other changes include banning the shift, and increasing the size of bases; that last a safety enhancement, per MLB.

I absolutely hate all of the rule changes. Baseball has a long tradition of consistency with the rules, other than the "live" balls. IMO this is stupid, catering to the ADD crowd. Maybe the larger bases aren't a horrible idea, but baseball has been living with them for 140+ years. The shift? I really hate banning that. I'd much rather see players learn to be disciplined at the plate and burn it.

I don't mind a pitch clock. I think 20-30 seconds may be better, and it shouldn't be used when there are runners on.
I hate the shift ban.

I don't think the shift should be banned, but let's face it: that's economic. It almost has to be coming from owners who invested in hitters and now see them rendered ineffective by that tactic. Guess what? That happens in games. You "ban the shift" by learning to hit where the defender isn't.
I'm indifferent to the size of the bases. If it really is a matter of player safety (as it has been sold) then I favor it. I'm just not convinced it isn't really about making it harder to defend bases, lowering the number of double plays, increasing the number of fielder's choice plays, and so forth.
Some of these guys who step in and out of the box, some of these pitchers who throw to first six or seven times per at bat. We certainly needed some way to rein that in. Of course, again, the motivation is economic. Games got long because the league and the broadcasters sold more and more ads. Not because the rules or the tactics changed. So the net effect of this will be to decrease the ratio of gameplay to advertising minutes.

Shift ban is stupid. But we'll see how much it affects a strikeout or homer run league.
