Early in the invasion, the Russian military was trying to push off west from Kherson to Odesa and then on the border of Moldova which would have linked them up with the 'break-a-way' pro-Russian region of Transnistria. Their advance was halted by a hastily assembled ad hoc group of Ukrainians at a crossroads in Mykolaiv. Outside of the battle for Hostomel airport, it was arguably the most significant battle of the early war as it save Odesa from Russian occupation and, it demonstrated that Putin's military could be beaten. You'll see all the usual Russian bs here that vatniks and useful idiots love to spread: "oppressed Russian speaking minorities" "shared history" 'brothers'
