Shades of Britney Griner. Definitely but less scary because that was Russia. I honestly feared she would remain in Russia for many, may years. If our State Department can negotiate with Russia, T & C should be a walk in the park! IMHO....

Did he buy the ammunition in T&C?
And yes, when traveling abroad, it's common-sense that certain things won't be allowed through Customs.

Did he buy the ammunition in T&C? And yes, when traveling abroad, it's common-sense that certain things won't be allowed through Customs. I don't think so, it was apparently in the bottom of one of his bags. It's a bag he uses to go to his hunting land. He didn't realize it was there, according to him.

Rulez is rulez, learn them or pay the consequences.
Why did they feel the need to take ammunition with them anyway?

I have no data to offer, but I suspect that the greater majority of countries do not allow firearms or ammunition through their customs, not first world countries anyway.

The State Dept can probably get his sentenced reduced without having to trade prisoners.

Really seems like a mistake but they seem to want to make an example of him.

There are elements within the Biden administration that would put these people behind bars here if they could. Simply for possessing ammunition. I wonder if they'll do anything at all.

You're right on with people needing to make themselves familiar with local laws when they travel. I think T&C's actions here are excessive, but that's because I'm an American and think their laws are stupid. People who don't thoroughly check their bags before they fly cause other problems too. It's hard for me to be sympathetic because at the end of the day, knowing foreign laws and what's in your bag... that's on you.

If you break laws elsewhere, expect to be punished elsewhere. It's YOUR responsibility as a traveler to know these things.
Reminds me of the Michael Fay case from the 90s, where Clinton debased the country trying to spare Fay from punishment. One of my least favorite of his moves.

Apart from disagreeing with your opinion of T&C's laws, I find myself in rare agreement with your post.

I hope this guy doesn't go away for 12 yrs, that is EXCESSIVE.

That's the one. Do I think caning is an appropriate punishment for vandalism? No. But I didn't get to make that decision, Singapore did. And if Fay didn't understand that when he committed the crime, that's his problem. Not anyone else's. Caning does have this in its favor: it is extremely discouraging of repeat offenses while at the same time costing little.

Like I wouldn't visit Saudi Arabia either.

Perhaps the most alarming thing is that the ammunition wasn't discovered until the Americans were leaving T&C and that means TSA didn't notice the bullets when these folks were going through security to leave the US.
I recently had my bag searched because a Bose bluetooth speaker set off some suspicion. But bullets didn't? Odd.

If they'd have Googled this "state dept advisors for travelers Turks and Caicos ammunition" they would have gotten this. A seasoned international traveler probably would have. An occasional traveler, not so much. These 4 schlemiels probably didn't even know the ammo was in their bags; sloppy unpacking from a previous hunting trip. The sentence doesn't seem to fit the crime. Biden got Griner out because he had a Russian arms dealer to trade for her. If you know of any Turksian and/or Caicosian arms dealers please notify Joe Biden at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, D.C., 20500.
