I've been trying to find a whisky that can compete with Lagavulin. I know, I know, Home Depot has some turpentine that'll do the trick!
Anyway, this selection doesn't do it. Shockingly unexpected, one of the blends for this particular outing is Caol Ila. Sorry, but if you are going for Big Peat then Caol Ila is not the place to start. Caol Ila 12 is a fine single malt but it not heavily peated like other Islays. The others blended in are Ardbeg, Port Ellen, and Bowmore. The problem with Big Peat is that it is forgettable. It has a very slight taste of vanilla and coffee and not much else. It was fairly smooth and nothing in the way of a finish. Even letting it sit on the tongue did nothing for it. Bland. Forgettable. For $60, get something else.
