I don't know why by my brain just pulled up that the Tomato was really the 'apple' that Adam and Eve consumed. I like mine with Old Bay or course sea salt and fresh ground pepper. Yum. An educated person knows tomatoes are a fruit and not a vegetable, however, it is a wise person that knows not to put them into a fruit salad. My wife makes a killer summer salad putting both together. 😄

So we had one bay fishermen check in ….how about fresh water. I wonder how the 'blowing up' of the Bloede Dam and eventually Daniels is going to help or hurt what little fishing there is in that stretch of water. The River Rd area above the Blode and Simkins dams was always one of my favorite spots for smallmouth. It changed dramatically after Simkins was removed. But there were still good holes. This will all make the river healthier. Thanks. It changed that much? Never caught anything around there except for a stocked trout or two.

Early winter has a great striped bass trophy season. in the lower upper bay. Caught a 40 incher in November a couple years ago. Wow! And now you know what a metre looks like ... Sorry, I couldn't resist it. We used Mitre rugby balls, they were no where near a yard+ long.

Thanks. It changed that much? Never caught anything around there except for a stocked trout or two. I grew up fishing that river. I never bothered much with the stocked trout. Caught a few by mistake fishing for bass. I must have caught thousands of small mouth, bluegill, suckers, and carp. As kids we would carry our rods, a sein and minnow bucket down the park. We would catch our bait in the creeks and spend the whole day wading and fishing the river. Later years feachered a few of dad's beers (Blatz or Natty Boh, Miller High Life if we got lucky) stashed away in a backpack and kept cold in a shaded creek. The long uphill trek home was the only bad part. Soaking wet and worn out. In the summers we would do it almost every day. The last few years the bathers have made fishing almost impossible in the park areas so River Rd was the best place to go. Well I guess I should rig up....weathers' cooled...hungry fish....before the leaves.

Tried to go out yesterday. Fog made me turn around. Couldn't see 15 feet in front of me. The radar I installed this year paid for itself with an intact boat.

I was always partial to Daniels. Avalon area too. My waders just dry-rotted out and I had to get rid of them. Maybe I'll buy a new pair and get back into it.
I use to go to the watershed in Frederick after work with a six-pack and cast a few times into a creek. It was mainly about being up there alone, drinking beer. Really felt like the wilderness up there a mere 10 mins from downtown Frederick. Don't think I ever caught anything worth keeping.

Fishing can be a full season sport there is no doubt. But now all the stocked trout are fished out and leaves will be falling soon. I was wondering if anyone out there has a go to fall fishing preference. If you have access to the bay it seems crabbing and such (if you have a boat) are on the table. Or not? If you are fishing streams and reservoirs, what are you guys looking for in the coming months. Seems after the stocking is done...there isn't much 'out there'. Thoughts? Fall is a great time for smallmouth bass fishing, especially late September into late October. After that it's pretty temperature dependent, as it gets colder they get less active - though you can still catch them if you know what to use and were to go. I tend to fish the Monocacy and Potomac the most as they are right in my back yard so to speak. I have a river boat with a jet-drive that I use when the water gets cooler - otherwise I love wet-wading the most in the warmer times. Spinnerbaits, tiny swim/crank baits work the best for me. When it's cooler, lots of people go to tubes, but I really hate fishing with them, it's boring to me so I am stubborn and stick to the spinners and swimmers. I feel like this year fishing season passed me by, I haven't gotten out much. First part was due to the constant flooding, second half was just too busy with work. In the Summer of 2017 I was in between jobs, and had the entire Summer to myself. I am pretty sure I waded the entire Monocacy River, LOL. It was a dry Summer so the water was low and warm and easy to walk down a couple of miles and back from bridges. One of the best Summers of my entire life! I am really hoping to get out over the next two weeks or so and smash some smallies - it's Prime Time for the big ones right now.

Anybody fishing this year? I've gone out a few times, Monocacy, Potomac, and Tom's Creek. Potomac was pretty dead for the most part, muddy, fast, and from what I hear the high water over the past two seasons has really hurt the smallmouth spawns, so DNR put 50k young'ns in, around Harpers Ferry I think. Similar with the Monocacy, been really dead, just tiny ones, but conditions have been...odd. Crushed it in Tom's Creek though I finally hit one of my favorite spots on the Monocacy that I've not been to in two years, walked the mile down the river from the bridge, and of course instantly t-storms exploded everywhere and chased me out. Did catch a couple before I fled...fast...though I had to decide whether running helter skelter over rocks and grass on the shore and risking stepping on a rattlesnake was better than getting struck by lightning.

Looking to go down to the bridge and try my hand at trolling for Spanish Mackeral.

I fished the Monocacy along the very remote area off Greenfield Rd yesterday evening. It's a very good area generally for catching smallmouth bass, if you're agile and brave enough to wade around the area, as it's boulder strewn, full of deep holes and rapids. The river is 300-400 feet wide through here, so you have a lot of room to just park and roam and never be too far from your car. There are a number of pulloffs and parking areas right along the river bank. Unfortunately that also makes it a heavily fished area, especially these days during the pandemic.
I caught five average sized 10-12 inch bass, which this year is about as good as it's getting thanks to the flooding.
Sadly though, the river banks are littered with trash here, empty buckets, food wrappers, chairs, and of course, dirty diapers everywhere. While there, I witnessed several spanish speaking families arrive set up picnics, then build large open fires (seriously, who builds a fire when it's 90 degrees out!? ). Also watched several of the moms changing diapers and throwing them off to the side. I reported the activity to DNR, so hopefully they can start patrolling the area. If it was this bad on a random Thursday, I can only imagine what it's like on the weekends! Behind my house it has been insane this summer with the family picnics, and the trash and diapers. My neighbors and I try to clean up when we can, but it's never ending, and we are just treating the symptom, not the problem. Our alderman convinced the city to place trashcans in the park, but I doubt it has an effect. These people just don't seem to care or know any better. Hopefully DNR can dish out a few fines and I bet the word gets around fast. In 2015 I had them come out to patrol a few times and a lot of the poaching came to a screeching halt.

That always makes me sad when I fish at Loch Raven. The rule should be "take out more trash than you brought in". DNR got back to me, and thanked me for reporting, said that they will add that area to their patrol. They already patrol the Park Mills boat ramp just down the river, and they believe that is part of the reason that they've "moved on" to this area. Kind of how when they cracked down on violators at Pinecliff Park, they moved on up to Riverside park, until they cracked down there too. Sunday morning I got up early and took my jet boat on the Potomac, launching at Point Of Rocks boat ramp. Not a soul in sight other than one other guy launching his bass boat. I launched after him, and he headed right over to the boulder pile below the 15 bridge, I gave him a wide berth and figured I'd fish that on the way home. Headed up the Virginia side of Paton Island, up to where it gets rocky and there are rapids. Stopped and caught a couple of nice 12 inch bass, tossed them back in and headed up into the cataracts of rocks and rapids. Got REALLY shallow up in there, banged my way over a cobblestone rapid, then over a gravel bar that was maybe 6 inches deep, proceeded to suck much gravel into the grate on the jet drive, which reduced my power to barely being able to continue up the really strong current. Managed to get up another quarter mile or so, found a nice boulder pile to anchor behind, but there was no going any further, too shallow, and too much whitewater. Caught two more here, then cleaned my jet drive of the debris, and head back down to the cut in the island. That was *tricky* to say the very least. Going down over the rapid I banged up, got stuck sideways on a rock, which was really perilous, could have easily flipped the boat if I didn't have the instincts I have. Worked it free with my oar, went through the cut, and up the Maryland side, which was much deeper. Lots of big boulder piles to fish behind. Went up to an area close to the shore, caught two more, and then the wind started screaming(guess it was the remnants of Laura). By now it was 11am, and the bite was off anyway, so I just stopped at a few areas to really just check out. By now the boat ramp was insanely crowded. Tons of rental kayaks laying all over the ramp, blocking it. Clueless DC hipsters abound with no sense of courtesy or responsibility. Saw one guy kayaking in the middle of the river with a mask on, lol. Seriously? Did he really believe he could catch the virus 500 feet away from anyone, or was it some kind of political statement? God only knows, but it was good for a chuckle. This is really a great part of the river, but I won't be back until the summer hordes are gone. I need to explore some more areas of it, but preferably when no other humans are around. I got home, ate lunch, and put together a new lure I'd been 3d printing the last two days. I really was anxious to test it so I decided to head up the Monocacy River, but wanted to go where I knew it wouldn't have many of those dreaded humans. One of my favorite all-time spots is at Detour. I have had many of my best bass fishing days at that area, in 2017(Summer Of Me) I had a day where I caught 16 bass in a couple of hours. This is also where Pipe Creek joins, so two rivers for the price of one Unfortunately it was 4pm, and I promised my wife I'd be home by 6pm, so I really was at a super bad time for the bite. I saw some bass, decent sized, and I just stuck right by the bridge where there's a deep channel cutting through on the Carroll County side of the river, a spot I usually catch 3 or 4 right off the bat every single time. Not today though...managed to catch one bass, and one fallfish, the bass took my new(unpainted) lure, so very happy by that. I was also VERY pleasantly surprised to see no trash anywhere, no evidence of other fisherman, other than one hispanic guy who seemed really nice and was telling me how much he loved this part of the river because it was so quiet. The flooding the past two years has really taken it's toll on the bass fishing, but there are definitely a lot of smaller bass around, good sign. Just need a Spring where it's not raging so that the hogs will come up and spawn and stick around a bit. I miss catching those 14-18 inch ones.

I think if they hear gringos speaking to them en Espanol their ears will prick up and take notice.

I've been childishly fascinated with waterways this summer. I've always had a fascination with streams and creeks as a kid and for some reason it came back this year. I recently found some trails behind my house that have gone unnoticed for 18 years. So I have been hiking them a lot this summer, following the streams to where they merge with other streams and then dump off into Lake Linganore, which then dumps into the Monocacy via Linganore Creek, etc. Went for a hike after a heavy downpour and was surprised to see streams swell to the size of raging rivers I could kayak down. I drove by Parr's Spring the other day where the South Branch of the Patapsco River begins. The Patapsco is my hometown river growing up in Catonsville. Been tubing on the Potomac twice this year (had my car towed once at Keep Tryst, still pissed about that!) and once on the Monocacy, and once on the Mon in my kayak. The Mon isn't the cleanest river but it's scenic and pleasant for a float. Apparently they're improving the boat ramp on Monocacy Blvd by the old Wal Mart. Not that much of a fisherman, although I have had a lot of success in the past on the Potomac. The Frederick Watershed is also fun for fishing once they stock it in the spring, but mainly for the sixer staying cold in the stream.

Nice, glad to see you enjoying these streams and rivers around Frederick, we are lucky to have so many in the area. I wasn't aware of the boat ramp improvements, I know that one has major problems with mud collecting in it for some reason. I've kayaked the Patapsco dozens of times, there is a lot of great whitewater sections there. I kinda miss that river. I love kayaking the Shenandoah through Harpers Ferry and into the Potomac, though it can get really congested with tubers at times. The rapids are a lot of fun there. Monday my step daughter and I fished the Monocacy and Pipe Creek and caught over 50 fish, including a 20 inch, 3lb smallmouth bass, biggest I've caught in years.

Wish I hadn't sold my ol' bassboat.
The only places worth fishing weren't stocked. Not that it matters cause between my knee and now the back... couldn't even walk the streams anymore no less the shore.😢

How many boats do you own sir? I'm jealous with just the one... Do kayaks count? I've got the 27ft express cruiser that we are going to likely be upgrading this year to a 36ft, and a 14ft flat bottom river boat with a jet drive that was a gift from a close friend a few years ago. The river boat I use for fishing on the Monocacy and Potomac. Also got an 8ft dingy with a propane motor(love that thing!), and 3 kayaks.

Had really good lunchtime catch last week, five nice bass in a Monocacy tributary. Next day tried again, and skunked. Water temps definitely getting low now, and bass are either inactive or moving downstream to warmer waters. Looks like somewhat warm temps to the end of Fall, start of Winter thanks to another La Nina event so maybe gonna get some Potomac trips in one of these weekends, or take off on a warm day.

Took my kayak out for a short run on the Potomac yesterday. Dropped it off at Keep Tryst Rd, drove to Brunswick and parked, then walked the 3 miles back to Keep Tryst to launch. First time I've paddled the Potomac in this kayak...been tubing there a bazillion times, but I didn't bring my spray skirt and took on some water during the series of rapids just east of the launch point. Next time I'll make sure to bring it. The ride was pretty short, maybe an hour...hour ten. Really looking forward to tubing this year.

How busy was the Brunswick boat ramp? I've been meaning to take my jet boat on that section to do some fishing, but not if it's crazy busy, though I guess weekdays none of them would be in the morning anyway.
I wish the weather would warm up the water some. Bass are lethargic in the Monocacy and it's tribs right now. Maybe the Po is a little better.

Saw one fishing boat while I was on the water. River was actually not that cold.

Been hard to justify the storage fee, wish I could keep in in my driveway, but you know, HOA and all.
