Just curious, did you watch the actual landing when it happened? Were you aware of the "Space Race" in real time? The whole thing was us against them dating back to JFK. The only TWO Big Boys on the block, the rest of the world weren't even also rans.

And I was aware of the space race from the 1957 launch of the USSR's Sputnik1, the first ever satellite in space. which incidentally was tracked by the Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank, UK.

I have to ask you, would you have succeeded in building your Apollo rockets, but for Wernher von Braun and IBM?

Wernher von Braun was made a American Citizen, yes, our NAZI's were probably smarter than their NAZI's. The Saturn rocket which was the Apollo booster was his baby, who's to say someone else might have come up with something else???
Ever hear of Goddard, he pioneered liquid fueled rockets.

Wernher von Braun should have been on trial at the Hague ... and would have been, if he wasn't so useful to the US.

I doubt he much gaf about the slaves for their labor. He just wanted to see birds fly, be it war or peace he had his motives.

I wonder if you would have felt the same if his V2 rockets were raining down on Washington DC or New York City, instead of London.

I said he was a NAZI that didn't gaf about his slaves. Is that some kind of complement towards him???

Dad worked for a local private contractor that was involved with design elements with the Redstone and other early rockets.
You've heard of Army or Navy brats? I was a Space brat.
Our family would follow Dad around the country to different bases. Baltimore to Detroit, to El Toro, to Fort Sill, to somewhere unnamed in the SW desert, to Huntsville.
I look forward to checking out "First Man".

The only TWO Big Boys on the block, the rest of the world weren't even also rans. I was, DEFINITELY! Right from the beginning with Mercury. Up till a year ago... I still had boxes and boxes of magnetic recording tapes of all the launches. Which I recorded live and direct from the TV. And I build many a capsule and rocket scale model any I could put hands on. I finally got some common sense regarding the tapes when I somehow connected the dots and realized that those were dumb as you an Google them and get nice fresh video and commentary. At anytime. Duhhh on me. 🤩 This new movie has me fired up to build a Mercury Redstone. What is interesting is the number of 'documentaries ' that are on the PB stations. And many now honestly reveal....that the race was NOT about national pride and discovery. In as much as it was really about 'getting the higher ground' ...orbiting military platforms and military bases on the moon. At the time of the beginning of NASA was also around the Vietnam war era. And the 'thinkers' realized a large scale military security progam in space would not 'fly...pun intended. So wrapping the program in the flag, patriotism, national pride and scientific discovery was the ticket. According to some of the documentaries. Which makes sense. Note why we don't have colonies on the moon or even mars: While Apollo 13 didn't help...NASA was already winding down the program (aka funding cuts). Because the military no longer saw Russia as a threat since Russia had pretty much thrown in the towel about reaching the moon and establishing it's military bases. I still do wish we could know if it is myth or fact that the Russians did in fact try manned flight to the moon and lost a few cosmonauts. And it could be true. Heck we didn't know till fairly recently that they had lost a large number just trying to orbit the earth. Sorry I rambled...space is one of my big interests.

I think I was in 4th grade and my teacher brought in a portable TV to watch Alan Shepard take off. We as 10 year olds (?) were in total awe! I was addicted to Mercury, Gemini and Apollo ever since. When Apollo 1 burned up I figured the race was over. USSR being a closed society probably did have a lot more Ah Shlts than they let on.

As you probably know that the Command crew were VERY much involved with the design and build of the capsule. In one of the documentaries. They talked about Ed White and Gus Grissom having a conversation about their misgivings about the wiring in the capsule as being crap. I think Ed said to Gus....'then why don't you do something....complain'...Gus said 'then they would fire me'. smh on that one.

The Russians went gaseous I think, safer BUT not nearly as compact and heavier.

There was a 4 part BBC series, The Race for Space, I have them on one Hard drive, that focused on the whole thing but it showed a Lot on the Russian side that we never saw. How Korolev became their chief designer and later Grushenko after his passing. Also how Von Braun came to the USA at the fall of the Reich. The show itself was kind of pale on the US side compared to the HBO 'From the Earth to the Moon" series that I also have but was Great on showing the Russkie side of the Race. What is interesting is that after all these years their Soyuz and the R7 booster is Still in service and the latest failure is a rare one after really Hundreds of flights. Now we are still waiting for another Man Rated system to get up ourselves. Say what you want about Elon & SpaceX but I think they're way ahead of anyone else here. The Boeing project looks like that's still going to take many years while the Manned Dragon should fly in Jan or Feb. Bezos? All his stuff has just been going straight up & down and gets nowhere near orbital velocity.
