I saw this in 1997 after my first viewing of The Godfather trilogy. I loved those movies so much I devoured gangster flicks that summer and watched Once Upon a Time in America shortly after. I remember it being a confounding film, certain moments stuck out to me, but much of it was lost on an 18 year old kid. I watched it last night for the second time. Wow. What a classic film. One of the best gangster movies of all time. It has an interesting backstory too. The movie is nearly 4 hours long and when it was first released in 1984 it was an edited mess at a little over 2 hours. The director's cut is a vast improvement obviously.
Great film. It's streaming on Netflix if you're interested in checking it out.

It's still one of my favorite Mob movies.
What stands out is how stylish and artsy the movie is. And there's a lot of serious acting with just facial expressions and no dialog. Worth a watch if you have 4 hours to spare...

Amazing score too by the legend Ennio Morricone.
