I watched the series finale last night and it was strange because while the original show is ending, there are like three or four spin-offs airing next year. The first two seasons of the show were great. Seasons three through six ranged between okay to good. It was all downhill after one of the show's best characters was killed in season 7. The graph below shows the peak and decline of the show's ratings during its 12 year run.

I watched for what felt like a lifetime and eventually got sick of it. And that was like 4 seasons ago.
I am tempted to binge what I missed for "closure".

It was all downhill after one of the show's best characters was killed in season 7. I always thought it was ridiculous how people got so upset by Glenn being killed. It's a zombie apocalypse - people are gonna die. Plus, Negan was one of the best villains in the show, and the most "uncomfortable" period of the show. Not to mention that's what happened in the comics. I think though that the show dragged on far too long, but again, they were kind of at the mercy of the comics with that. I think the TV writing got a bit uneven after the Saviors story wrapped up, and it really got screwed up by some of the actors quitting and going on to other things and having to alter things a little too much.

I didn’t read the comics. Does Maggie forgive Negan in the comics? What I found frustrating about the final seasons is how they turned Negan into a “good guy” and even depicted him as on semi-good terms with Maggie. Which is difficult to believe after he brutally killed Glenn. No matter how much his character changed, I can’t believe Maggie would ever forgive him or want to be in the same room as him. Overall, it seemed like the show runners didn’t know which direction to go after Rick’s character left the show. So there were lots of weird plot lines in the final seasons. On a personal note, my wife and I started watching the Walking Dead around the time when we first started dating. Watching it on Sunday nights has been our Sunday routine since we started dating. So we reflexively stuck with the show long after it jumped the shark. But the show kind of got boring and annoying after Negan was nearly killed and turned into one of the good characters.

I honestly think they should’ve ended the show and started making spin-offs at the end of the season where Rick Grimes disappears. I forget which season it was. Maybe season 9. They seemed to not know how to focus the plots of the show once Rick left. So in short, you don’t need to watch the final three seasons unless you feel like wasting time lol. The finale didn’t give the closure that most series finales give because the stories will continue in spin-off shows.

I only read the summaries of the comics. I really don't remember if Maggie forgives him or not. I do remember that after he kills Alpha, he is "redeemed" to a degree and that he and Carl become friends. Negan goes off and lives like a hermit after that and I think Carl still visits him in the end. You are 100% right about how the story went after Rick left. That was such a major deviation from the comics, I think they just didn't know what to do. They did seem to reign it back in with the Commonwealth story arc.

The ongoing joke was they never showed the scene where they found the ammunition factory. The battle with Neegan's crew used more ammo than Normandy beach.

It was also annoying how at one point, years into the zombie apocalypse, they were running out of fuel, food, and ammunition. But then they get to the Commonwealth which seemed to have unlimited supplies of everything 8 or 10 years into the zombie apocalypse. The show started off great but the writers seemed to phone it in after a few seasons.

I bailed after the season when Rick "defeated" Negan. Just got bored with it after that.
Agree with SF. First four seasons were really good. Just overstayed its welcome and it didn't help that they had a revolving door for showrunners.

I think I'm only one of a few that never watched any of this.
