Never went to a junk yard for car parts. On my old 63 Chevy, I went to Pep Boys and got a re-manufactured carburetor for $9.95 w/trade in. Just 2 bolts, the linkage and the fuel line was all I had to do. When the radiator cracked, I found someone in the Sunpapers that had one for a V-8. I got it but don't remember what I paid for it. Don't think it was much. Anyway all I had to do was turn the water hose and the thing the thermostat was under on the front of the 6 cyl. and turn it the other way to the other side and everything fit perfectly.
Since those days, well I don't work on cars myself, I'm no mechanic.

Damn electrical nightmare and one needs shop tools, gauges, meters, TSB's and the knowledge to use all that stuff. I LIKE playing with my old 350, pretty straight forward with no requirement other than a timing light and standard shop tools. New stuff.... no desire to work on so it goes to the shop for most anything.

Yeah, except for the high-end sports cars, the driver's cars are a thing of the past. Everything in new cars is about computers, i-phones, infotainment; everything save for driving the damn car. But then, Gen-Xer's and Millennials like it that way.

Walked to the Arcade in Hamilton along with a bunch of other neighborhood kids. I used to love going to the Arcade, walking down that long hallway and those little shops on the sides. I remember the shoe repair one the most, my mom took many a pair of shoes in there. Have you seen the FB page “Growing up in Hamilton?” Lotsa shared memories Walking down the Arcade hall reminded me of that hall they walked down to see with Wizard of Oz 😊

I used to enjoy both pages but I don't think many people post on them any more. Do you remember painting the store windows for Halloween?

My friend painted one. She didn't win anything but it was fun watching her. No, I went to St. Dominic's. The only time I was in Hamilton Jr. High or Sefton as we called it was to roller skate on Friday nights.

Who remembers the Streetcars in Baltimore? As far as I can remember riding with my Grandmother the fare was 10cents.
Or going to the movies when I was a kid "Hey Mom, can I have a Quarter to go to the movies?" Popcorn was a dime at the Velma on Blair Rd. Nice old ladies at the concession stands. I only had a nickle left after 3 or 4 bags of popcorn so she filled up a brown paper bag for me that was probably twice the size of the regular dime bag. I thanked her and went back to my movie. It is amazing isn't it. How one remembers things like that. Consider how many important ...really important things happens in ones life....and you remember that. One of my 'silly' remembrances was going to Church with my Dad and afterwards driving to the Princess Bakery and getting there wonderful rye bread or to Seitzers . And I always stole the heel on the way home. I can still smell the aroma in the car...driving home in my families 1956 Green and white Pontiac Star Chief.

As it is more often than not, cheaper to buy a new pair. I had a pair of Floreshine Brogues. With the fancy punch out pattern. Expensive at the time I got them in HS. But...the were DEFINITELY made to last. I had them and repaired them for decades....finally got rid of them maybe 10 years ago. YES 10 years and I graduated HS in 71. And I only got rid of them because my feet got bigger. 😂

That was a very big deal and very competitive. This was prior to malls taking over everything. So we still had a very viable business district. And pretty much every store sponsored a group for the windows. That was nice. Hmmmmmm almost like some of the Hallmark shows. OHhhhh God...they are already ramping up for Xmas...I was busy in my shop...but my wife was in the other room....and I was catching Xmas songs. YIKES!!!

Since those days, well I don't work on cars myself, I'm no mechanic. Having been around car repairs since I was born. Back in the day....most everyone was a 'backyard mechanic' in my neighborhood. And cars were simple and you could get away with a good set of screw drivers, a socket set and a set of wrenches. And if you didn't have 'the' tool...someone else did...and generally brought it over with a 6 pack and helped. Forget that now also. You can forget that now. I still keep my 1996 jeep going by my hand. It is probably the last car that I can still work on. Now I am pretty much relegated to changing the air filter and oil on the much newer van. 🤩 But I will brag a bit.....I DID...troubleshoot and fix an AC problem it had that the 'experts' 🙄 Couldn't find. Ohhh yeah …. I complained to the dealership...got ignored....went further up the food chain (district)....and got my money back for their 'work'. 🙄 And an apology and a nice discount coupon....very nice.

My Dad used to have to put that in the trunk so I didn't pick off all the 'nuggets' before it got home. 😊

Jr Orioles had to sit out in the bleachers. I got a splinter in the back of my thigh out there. Dad couldn't dig it out so we went to the Dr. and he couldn't get a hold of it either in spite of digging a 1/4" hole in the back of my leg. I tell people that I'm still walking around with a piece of Memorial Stadium in my Butt.

As far as Jr Orioles, well we were supposed to be stuck out there in the cheap seats but you know kids. We figured out how to get around where the fences were set up and got into the rest of the stadium. Now I remember clearly one time there were like 6 of us from the neighborhood and we got around to the Yankee dugout and were right there hanging on the top of it. You see back then the daytime summer games usually didn't have a whole bunch of people there, it was too Hot. Anyway, we were hanging out over their dugout and none other than Mickey Mantle had struck out. Well us kids I guess we were 10-12 around then, we were there as he walked back to the dugout and we were all there yelling at him calling him a no good SOB and a POS and other stuff. I was looking right at his face and he was looking right back at us. All he did was Smile at us and just walked back into the dugout without saying a word. I'll Never forget that.

It was just after the Pittsburgh game, yes metal props and wood seats make splinters! He "rented" it if I recall correctly with intent of landing it on the field!
A year or two after that we played rugby against Leeds of England, treated them to a baseball game. Some loved it, some hated it BUT many of them thought it was cool this was the stadium in question. They heard about the incident.

Okay, so they're the crusty ends then. We call them crusts in New Jersey. I always considered them junk and for the most part still do. Some like them, I for one don't. Now the GOOD sourdough from SF or a loaf of homemade Italian heated, dipped in olive oil and a slice of cheese...... HMMMMMMM that I like.

I don't tear it off slices of regular bread, I just avoid the heel. This thread made me wonder, how tough to make sourdough??? All the recipes I found require making a yeast culture.... I want it but I'm just not that meticulous to make a culture.

Okay, so they're the crusty ends then. We call them crusts in New Jersey. We? You have only lived there about a year. Nope sorry....it has always been 'heel' during my 30 year plus stay. 😉 NYers say crusty ends. And seeing as how NJ is pretty much a very large NYC suburb. That makes sense. Just like here in BaltCo.....Baltimore influx has forced me to say 'wiff'. 😎
