Just like to ask Hoot if she was feeding junk food to all those dudes captured in her basement all those years - I'm particularly worried about UpdaRack... If you consider bread and water junk food. They'd be eating good now if I had a basement. Had to get rid of all the junk food, red meat, alcohol, sugary soda... down 25 pounds now and still eating healthy. I've had enough turkey and chicken to grow feathers. Well, I'll be clucked! ...

I weighed more than 300 pounds (how much more, I'll keep to myself) about a year and a half ago. Since then I have lost over 80 pounds. I did it the old fashioned way: increased my exercise (primarily walking) and decreased my calories.
I had a number of reasons, some important and some trivial, for making this change. But I am glad I did. I will say that I had to "be ready" to do this. Having people tell me I needed to do this (my doctor, mostly, but also some relatives) didn't motivate me, because they weren't telling me anything I didn't already know intellectually. I wish I understood and could tell people what changed, because a number of folks have asked, but I just don't know.
I'm not done, but I'm a lot closer to maintenance than I am to the starting line.

EY, I've changed my eating habits 100%. Mostly fruits now, if I get hungry I grab some strawberries, or grapes, or some type of melon. I read all the labels at the grocery store and joined a local recreation center and go there everyday for at lease an hour. The more I lose the more energy I have. Got one more cardiac procedure getting done this Wednesday, and hopefully after that I can get off all the meds I'm on.

Yes, I had to learn to pay more attention to portion sizes - almost every time I used to grab a handful of chips or crackers it was, I'd guess, easily 300 - 400 calories worth. I swapped in raisins and other dried fruits for candy, and fish for red meat. Congratulations on your weight loss, good luck with the cardiac procedure!

We're under a pretty strict regimen here and what keeps our sanity is an Orville Redinbacher air pop machine and quality popcorn kernels (Franklin). Order brewer's yeast for salt substitute. Earth Balance for butter. So glad you're sticking with it. Nothing like a health crisis to get your priorities in order.

The trick for table salt is to only use a pinch or so on top of your food, and don't stir it in. That way it won't dissolve into your food and get lost in the shuffle...inducing you to add more salt. A little can go a long way. Remember that table or finishing salt is a garnish - not an ingredient.
I've tried gourmet salts outside of the umbrella girl brand -
*French Fleur de Sel *alder wood, hickory, & mesquite smoked salts *Hawaiian Alaea Red, & Black Lava salts *Himalayan pink, & black salts
