(Headline reworded slightly to fit available space) There is a new sort of fraud out there targeting the elderly: genetic testing that isn't necessary and costs Medicare a lot of money (that's all our taxes). The article explains in detail how it works, but briefly: scamsters looking to cash in on the popularity of genetic testing (i.e. 23andMe) find older folks various ways, offer them a free cheek swab and then bill Medicare for expensive tests of dubious value. Sketchy doctors sign off on the tests in exchange for a piece of the action. www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-fraud-genetics-specialreport/new-frontier-in-health-fraud-genetic-tests-of-the-elderly-idUSKBN1WA2H1

My luck they'll find out I have a couple kids walking around somewhere.

One of my brothers is really into genealogy. He's traced our family back to the mid-1700s or earlier. He asked me and a couple of our siblings to take a test through, I think, Ancestry. When they came back, they generally showed us as Central Europe - England area, which makes sense.
My sister's came back first and the results were about what I mentioned above. My results came in a couple of weeks later. When she asked me if I had received them, I told her that the DNA showed that I was 40% Australian, 25% Central Africa, and the rest European. You should have seen her face with a look of total disbelief and surprise!

Told my MIL about this and cautioned her to stay away. I don't want my suspicion that she is a descendant of Ghengis Khan confirmed.

If you're that worried, MOTR, I'd think your suspicions are already confirmed!

Kind of interesting how in this day an age we find that stereotypes still exist. I got along very well with my wifes mom she treated me like a son I'd say. And my wife got along with my mother probably better than I did.

Must be my warm, huggable and generous personality that does it.

I never knew my in-laws -- they died before I met my wife. But my wife had a wonderful relationship with my mother. Glad you and your wife have good relationships with your in-laws too, Guido.
I never took MOTR's post to mean there were any issues. That's the kind of joke I'd make about a MIL if I had one. I chuckled.

I still think 23 & me is an instrument of the government designed to collect as much DNA as possible. They have already used it to solve crimes.
