This movie is creating quite the...buzz.
From threats of theater shootings, to blacklash for sympathizing with an incel-ish type protagonist, to a win a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. All of this from the director of Old School and The Hangover!
I won't be seeing it this weekend, but I am very curious if the circus surrounding this film is overhyped. I also enjoy Joaquin Phoenix.
Anyone else planning to see it? If so, be safe.

One of my sons invited me to go with him to see (I think) "The Dark Knight" because he was a huge fan of Heath Ledger. Spent half of the movie trying to ignore what was going on on-screen. I don't do Joker movies anymore...

I've not heard very good reviews so far. That's disappointing.

A friend saw it and gave it four stars. I am intrigued but I also want to see Ad Astra.

I hear it makes violence boring. Well I don't want to see it then. I stopped watching Gotham because it had gotten too violent. I can't understand how anyone thinks that's entertainment.

I saw it...I have conflicting opinions on it. While it’s a well made film with an excellent lead performance, its motivations are all over the place and it’s no astute enough to really say anything. I can see this movie being a big hit among incels, and that’s dangerous. I can see why people thought there were going to be shootings opening weekend.

I enjoyed it. It tells the story of how the Joker became what he is in the Batman mythos. People expecting Cesar Romero's campy take on the character will be disappointed, because this is the homicidal modern version. It isn't exactly the comic book version, but it's fairly close (in the comics, the Joker's real name is unknown and he acquired his signature color scheme from a bath in toxic waste courtesy of a fight with Batman).
It is loosely based on a graphic novel called "The Killing Joke" in which Alan Moore had the Joker come to believe that a single terrible day was all that stood between a normal person and... him. Having theorized that, he then set about trying to turn Commissioner Gordon into a new Joker.

I wasn't impressed. Hannibal Lecter was more fascinating...and intellectual.

I watched it last night, I really enjoyed it. It was a little slow at first but I liked getting the back story.
I thought he did a great job but not as good as Heath Ledger. Looking forward to the next one.

Got a lot of Oscar nominations. I think Phoenix wins Best Actor. I'm no prude but, I have to be honest and say, that I find The Joker films and those of similar genre, along with the violent video games, to be sick and depraved. I never understand the fascination with them. It's little wonder that society is where it's at today.

I don’t get off on violent films but I do enjoy dark films and Joker was a good film with a great performance at the center. Very reminiscent of Scorsese films which I love as well.

I haven't seen 'Are You Being Served' since the 70's. Though my comment was attached to your post, it was not aimed at you or, anyone specifically, just to society in general, both there and here. British movie makers are just as bad. There must be a wealth of material between 'Mary Poppins' and the Mafia movies for the movie industry to make films about.

There are plenty of movies out there that aren't dark and violent like Joker. I watched The Two Popes last night and really enjoyed it.

I still like "Are You Being Served". I kinda miss the days all we could get on TV was PBS and the Christian Broadcast Network. CBN ran classic '50s sit-coms from around 1am - 5am each night, and me and the twins were up a lot around that time back then...
