It’s on Netflix now after a short theatrical run. I started it the other night and fell asleep for a few mins about 45 mins in. Woke up and watched another hour before I had to stop it. At 3.5 hours long it requires an intermission of some sort but it was pretty slow. Still good in spots and probably requires a second watch. It’s Scorsese after all. Gonna try to finish it up tonight.

Finished it.
It’s very good, just a bit jarring being that it subverts so much of what makes mafia movies so good: larger than life characters, explicitly violence, glamorizing crime, etc. The film does none of that. Instead it makes the mob look very unglamorous and a soul crushing experience, not just for the people involved, but their families too.

Maybe one of the Best 'Mob" movies I've seen! Yeah it was Long and I too had to take it in 2 parts. I didn't see any problem with the Computer De-Aging of DeNiro & Pesci. I'd bet we'll see more of that with other older actors. I've said it before, Scorsese definitely has a hard on for Mobsters. I didn't know Pacino was in it too! Three Top Notch Actors! Whew! And the historical aspect of it with JFK and then Hoffa disappearing. I remember all of it!

It doesn't glamorize the life at all the way Goodfellas did in some ways. Scorsese has also made a career out of analyzing his Catholic guilt and themes of redemption (or lack thereof) and those themes are rife in this film. Out of a career in which he's directed roughly 40 films, 3 maybe 4 films have been about "mobsters". They just happened to be among his most revered. His next film is going to be Killers of the Flower Moon, about the murder of native Americans on reservations after the discovery of oil on the land. Can't wait.

I'm halfway thru. Very slow watch. I got bored. My wife kinda felt the same. I recently found a video where someone used free software to "de-age" the actors on their own and it looks worlds better than what Netflix came up with for millions of dollars.

I'm halfway thru. Very slow watch. I got bored. Me too. I'm left wondering what all the brouhaha is about it.

The movie was a slow grind with too much ad-libbing for my taste. Scorsese just let it happen when the camera rolled because of the massive egos he was dealing with, and ended up with too much yakking. The story itself was nothing new...

Yes, it did feel like the actors were going off script a bunch...however that gave the dialog a realistic feel. I agree it tread familiar territory but it's rarely been done in such a bleak, joyless subverted way. Previous mob films glamourized the mafia...this film did not do that at all.
