D.C. Fontana dies at 80Only Star Trek fans are likely to recognize the name. At a time when there weren't a lot of women writing for television, she wrote many episodes of the original series, including some of the best. (She is usually credited as "D. C." because Roddenberry advised her she would be more likely to sell scripts under her initials than under her name). She served as a story editor throughout much of season 1 and all of season 2. She also introduced Roddenberry to William Theiss, who designed most of those costumes. She was later involved with several of the spinoffs/successor series.

She did the screenplay for the Star Trek TOS episode "The City on the Edge of Forever;" written by Harlan Edison. The episode won numerous awards and is arguably considered to be one of the best episodes in ALL of the Star Trek Universe.
This was done at a time when women were rarely involved in television screenwriting, which is rumored to be the reason why she commonly used "D.C." rather than her full name.
