Just watched the “Trial of the Chicago 7” film on Netflix.
Great movie with an all-star cast.
It’s about the late-60s trial for the anti-war activists who led the riots outside the 1968 Democratic convention. Sacha Barron-Cohen plays Abbie Hoffman.
It seems fairly historically accurate and there are some themes in the film may be relevant to modern day protest movements.

I had a friend who worked on it. I’ll check it out once this horror movie marathon is over this weekend.

Watched over the weekend. Good movie, not great. Strong message though which essentially boils down to, if you don’t give people a space to protest and the authorities continue to antagonize you, bad stuff happens. Obviously this applies to today.
The courtroom scenes were great, they also were infuriating to see justice in the hands of a senile judge and an obviously biased one to boot.

There were lots of unfair political trials of Leftist activists in the 60s through 70s. I thought the performance by the Cast and the screenplay was great.

In many ways it still is. In that regard I understand where the anger and some of the destruction comes from. I don't condone it, but I understand the process of anger turning into breaking stuff.

The takeaway I got from the film is that in the 60s, there were real leaders of the protest movements and the movements had specific objectives (civil rights, women's rights, ending the Vietnam war, etc). The leaders were flawed of course and some of their tactics were quite extreme. But many of their goals were eventually achieved. What's lacking among today's protest movements are leaders and clear objectives. Most of the modern protest movements seem super disorganized and aren't always clear about specifically what they want to achieve.

"Defund the police" is about as clear a goal as they have produced and no one really knows what that means.
