Oscar Nominations were released yesterday.

It actually turned out to be a pretty solid year for film despite so many releases being postponed. My thoughts about some of the nominations I have seen:
- Really sucks Regina King wasn't nominated. One Night in Miami is based on a play and King directed some lesser known actors into some excellent performances. Miami was also passed over for Best Film. It is better than a few of the films that were nominated.
- Five women have been nominated for Best Director before this year. This year there are two and should have been three with Regina King. Chloe Zhao, who directed Nomadland, is the favorite to win.
- Supporting Actor is such a strong category. Daniel Kaluuya will win but all the actors gave great performances, especially non-actor Paul Raci in Sound of Metal and Leslie Odom, Jr. in One Night in Miami. Lakeith Stanfield being nominated as supporting actor is kind of odd since he was the lead in Judas and the Black Messiah but I am just glad he was nominated. Great actor, great performance that was a bit overshadowed by Kaluuya.
- The documentary Collective is nominated for Best Foreign Film and Best Documentary. It should win both. It is hands down the best film of the year. It is a doco about the corruption in the Romanian healthcare system following a devastating nightclub fire that killed 64 people. It is the most moving, enraging experience I had watching a movie this year and so much of it applies to what we've been dealing with here in the US the last year. I highly recommend it.
- Chadwick Boseman deserves Best Actor. Unfortunately he won't be able to accept it but his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is heartbreaking on so many levels. What a presence on screen. What a talent. Gone. I still can't believe it.
- Best Actress is a pretty wide open race. Frances McDormand has been at the top of the category for a while but I think Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman could sneak in for the upset. Andra Day also won the award at the Golden Globes.
- I think Nomadland is a great film. I think it wins and deserves to win. I have yet to see Minari or The Father which both seem to be gaining steam. Mank was a beautiful bore but if you make a movie about Hollywood, you're going to score a ton of nominations. Sound of Metal was amazing, Riz Ahmed is such an underrated actor. Judas and the Black Messiah and Trial of the Chicago 7 are period pieces designed to evoke current struggles. Both are great. Promising Young Woman was a little underwhelming but obviously has current issues on its mind as well. I feel like Miami deserves it more.
