The two on the left argue the Church as a force of good. Hitchens and Fry, not so much. Hitchens is ferocious. You can't say he doesn't have a point and you certainly can't say he didn't make it. Fun starts around the 13 min mark after the Bishop speaks.

Is this the "debate" from 2009? Hitchens has been dead for several years, if I'm not mistaken.

Given that the Church created a culture that permitted and even encouraged (by removing fear of consequences) the sexual predation of children, it's very difficult to regard it as a moral authority. Perhaps in fifty years if it keeps its nose clean, our grandchildren will be able to so regard it. (I guesstimate that child predation has been going on among the clergy, with the cooperation of bishops and higher, for that long. It might be longer.)

Is this the "debate" from 2009? Hitchens has been dead for several years, if I'm not mistaken. Yes, he died in 2011. He was a hate monger but some will remember him fondly. He was a complicated man. At bottom he's an old school Leftist who believed old school things. The Church at least since the Spanish Civil War was anathema to the Left. Hitchens has simply turned the cannons on the Islamicists on the same humanitarian grounds.
