NE does seem ripe for maglev but at those speeds it makes more sense to connect longer distances. Like say, DC and Chicago or Atlanta, which could get you to both places in about two hours.

Depending on security. Maglev sounds wonderful IF you can show up at a train station and just hop on. Getting to Chicago in two hours after waiting an hour and a half with a TSA type organization wouldn't have any advantage over flying. Except the possibility of falling 5 miles through the air to your death, of course. I hate flying. Maglev does sound like fun. Like riding a high speed version of the tram at DFW airport.

Why would we need TSA for that when we don’t have it for Amtrak?

There is currently very little to no security on Amtrak. At least the time I used it there wasn't, and the ticket said show up 30 mins early to account for security measures. There was one time I went through security at a train station in my travels and that was going from Barcelona to Madrid. A bit of a line to put your luggage through a scanner, then that was it.

Why would we need TSA for that when we don’t have it for Amtrak? higher value target. True I guess. Which begs the question of why Buses and Trains currently don't have nearly as much security as airports. But that's for a different topic. Last I checked, Maryland is still planning some sort of Maglev project but it's facing some resistance.

Well, it'll cost a bazillion dollars I'm sure, and people hate any form of transit not involving a car on principle.

Yet Europe and Asia just drill through mountain ranges like gophers and manage to make nice new things for the people who live there. What can't we have nice things? Free money was supposed to provide the ability to build infrastructure such as this. But I'm sure we'll have some morose republican tell us it costs too much, it's too complicated, it's whatever and that maybe if we give the uber rich another tax cut they'll build us some rickshaws.

Presumably our ratcheting down perpetual war brings us a dividend given we haven't had a terrorist so much as fart in America in years. Now the white trash groups are another matter.

Not sure your logic is sound as the period with a lack of terrorism corresponds closely with us being active in those wars. Not that I think it is wrong to draw it down, just not sure if you have established a logical cause and effect.

Not that I think it is wrong to draw it down, just not sure if you have established a logical cause and effect. The cause happened 20 years ago. The effect (fear and secrecy) has matured into adulthood and has a life of its own, a wife, kids and an extended family, mortgage debt and a broken down minivan. Like people wanting to ditch the mask, I want to ditch operating out of fear. I'll grant you it's not going to go on its own or without some urging as the consumer society has prospered from our turning inward.

I don't disagree with you except the draw down will likely have little to do, positively or negatively, with our short term security from terrorism. Which in and of itself is an argument to follow through with it.

The Maglev plan here is getting a lot of resistance since they want to put a station in Westport. The people living there now don't want it because they probably couldn't afford a ticket.
