Try it for a month. Get your news from newspapers, radio and on line. Listen to music. Listen to the radio. Talk to your neighbors, your friends, your children.
Build a firepit out back and have a campfire, if you feel the need to see moving light.
I bet you can't give it up. What should that tell you?

I do all of those things regularly and I enjoy watching tv also. It's been four years without a TV for me. That's not saying I have not watched it since then. I have a TV, but it's not hooked up. I might hook up the DVD player this winter so I can catch up with the Marvel Universe. Network programing offers no appeal to me.

I watch prestige shows. Game of Thrones, Narcos, The Affair, Ray Donovan, etc.
Aside from that, sports, and the occasional movie, I rarely watch TV.
I do all the other stuff mentioned in the OP as well.
It's not watching TV that's unproductive, it's the amount of it, and the type of shows people watch.

I miss Turner Classics but not much else. Good advice because one of the problems in life these days is all the noise. The more you can turn that down the better for your own sanity.

Kinda funny though.......going to the TV board to tell people to turn off their TV's. That's like going to the Music board and telling people to stop listening to Music, or the baseball board to tell people.......well you get the point. Reeally good advice would be to tell us all to stop posting on message boards!

I very seldom watch network TV. I was in Nashville for 8 days with my husband, 2 of his sisters and 1 brother-in-law. All the brother-in-law wanted to do was stay in the house and watch tv and drink beer. I couldn't believe how addicted he is to watching tv.

It's OK to watch what you choose. There are too many are addicted to moving lights in their living rooms.

I think some people use the tv to avoid interacting with others...for example, the above mentioned brother-in-law.

He had a very mild heart attack last year and has since become a huge couch potato.

I caught caught a bad case of pneumonia a few years back, and had a mini-stroke due to lack of oxygen. Almost kicked that bucket. I lost the use of my right leg. Doctors said control would come back, and after a lot of hard work it did. Full recovery here. Back to normal. But in the interim, I often got stuck in front of a TV. I grew intellectually bored with it, and chose other ways to amuse myself. Now I can't see myself wasting time sitting in front of a screen when I could be doing something more satisfying.

I was given another chance, and grabbed it.

For some reason this thread is reminding me of the Violent Femmes (this might be an obscure reference but if you get it, enjoy).
