It's the idea of invading US air space and over our nuclear installation for the purpose of spying. The Pentagon is all over it and tracking it . I'm surprised we haven't shot it down yet.
(CNN)The US is tracking a suspected Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon over the continental United States, defense officials said on Thursday, a discovery that risks adding further strain to tense US-China relations.

It's a balloon 🎈, they aren't steerable, if it isn't loaded with a nuclear bomb it can hardly be dangerous. Are satellites an act of war, they are far better positioned for spying?

If this balloon floated over the Pacific from China why didn't the military notice it until it reached Montana .

If this balloon floated over the Pacific from China why didn't the military notice it until it reached Montana . Good question. Perhaps the military didn't have a spy balloon over the Pacific at the time. They could have had a balloon 'OK corral' in no man's land.

China denies that it's a spy/military balloon. They claim it's for civilian research. FWIW, China has satellites just as we do so it makes no sense that they would need to use a balloon for spying. But it's possible that they could be sending some sort of underlying message to the Biden administration. The Pentagon says the balloon is harmless but they're keeping an eye on it. AP: China says balloon is for research, accidently strayed

China regrets the unintended entry of the airship into U.S. airspace.
Isn't this the part where Chinese leaders involved run a sword into themselves?

On what basis is a balloon an act of war? Believe the bees considered this an act of aggression.

Let's be clear. It's a violation of our airspace.
Is it the biggest deal in the world? No.

Passing over Missouri now and on a path for Kentucky
I'm thinking ahead here with concerns as this vehicle moves eastward. If it passes over DC ?? If it does it would be destroyed immediately I'm sure. We don't know exactly what else is in the payload.

Ah interesting, just saw a report saying our military technology prevented the vehicle from imaging and recovering any information it was looking for. 👍

WASHINGTON, Feb 3 (Reuters) - The political uproar over a suspected Chinese spy balloon drifting over the United States did not just derail a planned visit to Beijing by the top U.S. diplomat, it also threatens to upset attempts by both countries to steady an increasingly rocky relationship. The reaction in the United States to what appears to be an ill-timed spying mission will have lingering consequences for efforts to stabilize ties – already near historic lows. Some U.S. lawmakers are demanding that President Joe Biden, a Democrat, hold China to account for what officials are calling an unacceptable violation of U.S. sovereignty. www.reuters.com/world/china-balloon-soaring-over-us-deflates-hopes-diplomatic-thaw-2023-02-04/
