Angelos used to do things that made some sense from a marketing perspective and no sense at all from a baseball perspective. So when I think of moves that might be good for the future but bad for marketing I think, "Build a solid team and the marketing will take care of itself." Nevertheless, shipping out Mancini would anger a huge swath of fans, and in this particular case I think they need to remain cognizant of that.

My wife was very upset when I mentioned the possibility last night. She just got back into watching games again after a few years of having no interest after they traded away all of her favorite players.

O's win again! Rays lose, so we're 2 games back of a Wild Card spot.
This team may not be selling anyone.

1.5 games back.
I'm still pissed about the Mancini trade. I feel like we didn't get enough to warrant wrecking the team chemistry. Then again, maybe they'll try to "Win For Trey".
I'm less pissed about the Lopez trade now that I have a day to marinate. Lopez was a flash in the pan that was never going to be more valuable than he is now. Getting four pitchers for him isn't bad, and they have other arms like Bautista that can fill the closer role.
I'm sure Trey will be happy to be in the playoffs this year, but if the O's make it too, you can't help but wonder if he'd rather have been part of that.

I'm sure Trey will be happy to be in the playoffs this year, but if the O's make it too, you can't help but wonder if he'd rather have been part of that. I'm angrier about the Lopez trade. Three of the four guys we got back are lottery picks and the other guy is a 28-year-old BP guy with a 9 ERA. Lopez may not sustain this production but he was an All-Star, is one of the best closers in the game right now, and is cost-controlled for the next two years. That should have yielded more of a return. Trey was a FA and unlikely to return at the price he'll command. We also have guys who can equal or surpass his production. Lopez was going to be the closer in 2023 and 2024 if he produced. So that trade makes the 23 and 24 teams worse. None of the guys we got in that trade will be in the majors by then.

So that trade makes the 23 and 24 teams worse. Well that's assuming Lopez doesn't revert to form. Don't get me wrong, he has had a great year, but there have been some cracks too. Dammit Pickle, I was feeling better about all of this and you had to burst my bubble

Dammit Pickle, I was feeling better about all of this and you had to burst my bubble Lopez had one bad stretch which was like 3 games. Other than that he's been about as good as a closer can be.

All they have to do is keep winning non-save games! Problem solved!

Season sweep of the Rangers today. First time we’ve swept a team for the season since 2010. That time it was the Angels.
The Rangers are bad. They made several errors this series and dogged it late in today’s game when it was clear they were gonna lose. It’s nice being on the giving end of that kind of transaction. 😎

Elias said they intend to speak to Mancini when he is a free agent, but that's a safe comment: good PR and has no downside regardless of where Mancini lands. While I feel losing Lopez hurt the team this year I am less convinced he'd be the answer going forward than pickle is. I suspect he's having a better than average year. For his sake I'd be happy if he proved me wrong, but I don't expect that. What Elias made clear is that he does not plan to contend this year; if he never planned to contend this year he isn't willing to change his plans despite the fact they have played better than might have been expected at the beginning of the season. I suppose if he has a plan and is sticking to it that's a good thing - if the end of the plan is the solid team we all hope for. I feel like they better plan on contending next year, when I expect more promotions and because the clock is ticking on Rutschman, whom I am not at all certain they will be willing to re-sign when he reaches free agency.
Hyde has invited Brooks Robinson to speak to the team, and has told all player-alumni they are welcome in the clubhouse any time.

Huge win to start probably the most important series of the year to date. Bit of an offensive awakening at just the right time. Hope they can take at least 2 games from the Jays in the series.
Bautista got a little rattled after Mateo committed a rare error to start off the ninth, but he shut it down impressively. That guy is a monster, and IMO a better long term solution for closer than Lopez, whom like EY, still have it in the back of my mind was a very bad pitcher having a great year, and may revert to form at some point.

Odor going to the mound with Rustchman to calm Felix down after the first two men reached saved the game. His WAR deserves a +1 after that.

Is Rutschman in the Rookie of the Year conversations yet?

Yeah he's probably in there but it's looking more like it could be Julio Rodriguez.
Felix Hernandez is in there too.

Is Rutschman in the Rookie of the Year conversations yet? Hitting numbers probably aren't sexy enough yet. OPS is slowly going up since it seems like he always either walks or doubles.

It's nice to have some guys on the team who can take a walk. Rutschman and Vavra especially.

And they did, taking the first two from Toronto. Win again today and you sweep them and take control of the last WC spot.

The White Sox need to find a catcher named DeSist to pair with tonight's pitcher...

Last night might have been one of the most impressive wins of the year. That was almost a "give up" game for them against Cease, and after falling down 2-0 right off the bat, you had to chalk it up as a loss.
Bautista showed a lot of poise after getting a little wild for a moment. I love watching him pitch.
On a side note, can we get Odor out of the lineup already? Lord he is a black hole...not Chris Davis sized, but bad enough. Bring up Henderson, let him play that spot.

Even though Cease held them in check after the 1st inning, there were a lot of good at bats and he was ultimately pulled in the 6th. Such a change from years past where he probably would have made it to the 8th based on pitch counts.

His effect on the team (call him the Human Anchor) might be remembered even longer than Buckner's "right through the wicket" miscue.
