Watching breaking news now, not much info yet. They are reporting it was stuck by a cargo ship around 1:30am which has sunk and rescue efforts are under way.

Good Heavens.
Prayers for the victims who were hopefully few and rescuable as well as for first responders who must work in the midst of this disaster. 🙏🏿

I'm watching the news about it. The video of the collapse was captured and it's tragic and horrifying. Preliminary stories are the cargo ship was billowing smoke prior to hitting the bridge pylon, maybe an electrical fire and system failure, but too early to know exactly what happened in my opinion. Link to collapse hereMy heart goes out to all the victims, hopefully some were saved. What an awful event.

I was hoping it was something mechanical and not anything else.

Wow. It collapsed instantly. The only thing I can think of is thankfully it happened late at night and it looks like there weren't that many cars on the bridge at the time of impact.

That’s as horrific of a bridge collapse as I’ve ever seen. I think we can rule out terrorism though. They could have waited a couple hours when the bridge was chock full of commuters and likely killed 1000 people. Only having 20 people missing after seeing that video is a minor miracle.

It’s difficult to watch seeing headlights of cars traveling on the bridge as it collapses. Prayers to victims and their families.

At least we know one victim rescued from the water was well enough to refuse treatment. This is so surreal.

A good friend of mine lives on the water in Stoney Beach (it's both in Pasadena and Baltimore), she posts a lot of beautiful pics on Facebook where she is sitting on her deck overlooking the water. The Key Bridge is always in the background. She just posted one... so strange with no bridge in the background today. It really is surreal.

I honestly didn’t see any cars traveling across the bridge at the moment of collapse. I saw some tractor trailers who made it out of frame just before it collapsed. Hopefully they made it. What I did see was some stationary cop cars/emergency vehicles, likely for overnight construction.

It is so weird to think of how many times I have traveled that bridge to visit family and friends in Edgemere. Fingers crossed that everyone survives. Very sad.

Lives are more important but think about the impact on shipping, short and long-term.

Lives are more important but think about the impact on shipping, short and long-term. Most of the area's gas terminals are in South Baltimore and hazmat can't go through the tunnels so gas tankers are going to have to go around the beltway now.

I used to walk with my grandfather from his house on Prospect Ave in Catonsville to Mt. DeSales. From the top of the hill you could see the Key bridge on a clear day. Crazy to think that it's gone.
But it will be rebuilt.

I am interested in learning how the heck that ship lost power and caught fire so soon after leaving the terminal.

Do you know how much gas goes through that terminal on trucks versus by pipeline or rail?

Do you know how much gas goes through that terminal on trucks versus by pipeline or rail? I've been out of the game for years, but I believe most of the gas/diesel gets to the terminals through pipeline and ethanol is barge or rail. I was thinking of the effect on final deliveries to gas stations that will need to take the longer route.

Gonna be a traffic snarl for a long time.

Not familiar w geography. Does all traffic have to exit through this point?
